Obesity In The News / Shefaly Yogendra
Trick or Treat?
On Halloween night, this is an irresistible story, too good not to share. Tonight when children go trick-or-treat-ing at Robert Zyluk's door in Winnipeg, Canada, they will receive a 24-page "Produce Passport" which will offer them healthy eating tips and also provides a space for children to collect stickers taken from fruits and vegetables. The childhood obesity epidemic is his main motivator as is the copious amounts of candy that will be consumed by kids tonight. Detractors have warned him that he will be cleaning eggs from the front of his house tomorrow.
I, on the other hand, think the man is brave and should be commended for doing what many adults are squarely failing to do. We are neither leading by example nor using our adult authority in various relationships with children - aunt/ uncle, parent, teacher - to steer and influence children's dietary choices.
